About the Fatty Acids Database
Why this exists
Are fats good or bad? For many people fats are associated with confusion and even fear. Fatty acids are one of the most argued-about topics in nutrition, and one of the least clearly explained.
This project has two primary aims:- Centralise evidence-based reference information on nutritionally relevant fatty acids.
- Simplify this information for non-experts.
Who it is for
As the subject is technical, the depth is pitched at readers with a life-science background. However, considerable effort was spent making the content accessible to anyone health-conscious and curious: We use plain-language first, and make content clickable. Learn more about our Philosophy.
What is covered
The database currently catalogues 92 fatty acids, with more added over time: saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, along with the lesser-known branched-chain and furan fatty acids. Hydroxy (HFA) and oxidised (OXFA) fatty acids are planned. The goal is to cover only fatty acids relevant to human nutrition and health.
Each fatty acid carries its identification and isomers, nutritional sources, biosynthesis and metabolites. Metabolic roles, associated proteins and — most importantly — health associations are in progress. The Roadmap shows where that stands.
All information covered will have references attached, learn more in Evidence & AI.
Who is behind it
Phase one of the project was initiated and developed by Ziv Kenet - digital health consultant, entrepreneur, and citizen scientist.
This project will grow and need a team! If you work in lipid biochemistry, nutrition science, informatics, or are just a fatty acids fan, please check out Collaboration.
How it is funded
The site is run on a not-for-profit basis: it is self-funded and built in donated time. Keeping it non-commercial is a core principle. If you would like to help this project move faster, get in touch.
This site is for educational and informational purposes only and is not medical or dietary advice. See Terms & Legal.
