Terms of Use & Disclaimer

Last updated: July 17, 2026

These terms govern your use of the Fatty Acids Database (the “Site”). Please read them carefully. By accessing or using the Site you agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

Not medical or dietary advice. The Site is an educational and scientific reference only. Nothing on it is intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition, or to replace advice from a qualified physician, dietitian, or other health professional. Always consult a professional before making decisions about your diet, supplements, or health.

1. Agreement to these terms

The Site is operated by an individual (the “site operator”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). These Terms of Use and Disclaimer (the “Terms”) form a binding agreement between you and the site operator. By accessing, browsing, or otherwise using the Site, or by downloading any data it makes available, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to these Terms and that you are legally able to enter into this agreement. If you are using the Site on behalf of an organisation, you represent that you are authorised to bind that organisation to these Terms.

2. What the Site is

The Site is an open, evidence-based reference for fatty acids and related nutrition science — their structure, food sources, metabolism, associated proteins and metabolites, and health effects — compiled from public scientific sources and the published literature. It is provided for general educational, informational, and research purposes only. It is not a clinical tool, a laboratory information system, a medical device, or a substitute for primary scientific sources.

3. No medical, nutritional, or professional advice

The content on the Site — including profiles, compositions, metabolic pathways, topic explainers, figures, and any commentary — is general information and is not medical, nutritional, dietary, pharmaceutical, or other professional advice. It must not be used to diagnose or treat any health problem or disease, to determine dosing, or to make clinical, dietary, or supplementation decisions. Statements about fatty acids and health describe what the cited research reports; they are not recommendations. Individual needs vary, and the science evolves. Always seek the advice of a qualified physician, registered dietitian, pharmacist, or other appropriate professional before acting on anything you read here, and never disregard or delay seeking professional advice because of something on the Site.

4. No professional relationship; emergencies

Using the Site, or contacting the site operator, does not create any doctor–patient, dietitian–client, or other professional relationship. The Site does not provide emergency services. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your local emergency number or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.

5. Scientific accuracy and data limitations

We take data integrity seriously: references are intended to be real, verifiable publications, and associations are meant to reflect what the cited sources actually report, with honest gaps preferred over manufactured links. Even so, the Site is compiled and maintained on a best-effort basis and may contain errors, omissions, outdated figures, or misattributions. Composition values, intake estimates, identifiers, and reported associations can differ between sources and change over time. No representation is made that the content is complete, current, or fit for any particular purpose. For anything important — and for any clinical, regulatory, safety, formulation, or research use — you must independently verify the information against the primary sources before relying on it.

6. Third-party sources and external links

The Site draws on and links to third-party resources such as USDA FoodData Central, PubChem, LIPID MAPS, HMDB, PubMed, and the publications it cites. Those materials belong to their respective owners and are subject to their own terms and licences. Links and references are provided for convenience and do not imply endorsement. The site operator does not control and is not responsible for the content, accuracy, availability, or practices of any third-party site or dataset, and your use of them is at your own risk and subject to their terms.

7. Acceptable use

You agree to use the Site lawfully and not to: use it in any way that breaches applicable laws or regulations; attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Site, its accounts, servers, or infrastructure; probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Site or defeat any security or access controls; interfere with or disrupt the Site or place an unreasonable load on it, including through scraping, crawling, or automated collection that degrades service or ignores published limits; introduce malware or other harmful code; or misrepresent the data, or use it in a way that is misleading, defamatory, or harmful. We may suspend or restrict access that we reasonably believe violates these Terms or threatens the Site or its users.

8. Accounts and contributions

Some areas of the Site may require an account. If you create one, you are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for activity that occurs under your account, and you agree to provide accurate information. If you submit, edit, or contribute any content or data, you represent that you have the right to do so and that it does not infringe anyone else’s rights, and you grant the site operator a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to store, use, adapt, and display that contribution as part of operating and improving the Site. We may review, edit, or remove contributions — particularly unverifiable or inaccurate scientific claims — at our discretion.

9. Intellectual property and reuse of data

The Site’s design, original text, code, and the selection, arrangement, and compilation of its data are the property of the site operator and are protected by intellectual-property laws. Underlying scientific facts and third-party data remain subject to the rights and licences of their original sources. Unless a specific dataset, download, or page states otherwise, you may access and use the content for personal, educational, and non-commercial research purposes, provided you do not remove any notices, you cite the primary sources for anything you rely on, and you attribute the Site where you reproduce or adapt its original material. You may not systematically copy, redistribute, or commercialise substantial portions of the Site or its compiled data without the site operator’s prior written permission. Where a downloadable dataset carries its own licence terms, those terms govern that dataset.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

The Site and all content, data, and downloads are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site operator disclaims all warranties, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, and any warranty that the Site will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or free of harmful components. No advice or information, whether oral or written, obtained from the Site creates any warranty not expressly stated here. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event will the site operator be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, goodwill, health outcomes, or other intangible losses, arising out of or relating to your access to or use of (or inability to use) the Site or its data, whether based on warranty, contract, tort (including negligence), or any other legal theory, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. In particular, the site operator is not liable for any decision made or action taken in reliance on the Site’s content, including any dietary, supplementation, clinical, or research decision. Where liability cannot be excluded, the site operator’s total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the Site is limited to CAD $100. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the site operator from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or connected with your use of the Site, your violation of these Terms, or your infringement of any rights of a third party.

13. Availability and changes to the Site

The Site is a work in progress and is offered without any guarantee of continued availability. The site operator may add, change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Site — including data, features, and downloads — at any time and without notice, and is not liable to you or anyone else for doing so.

14. Changes to these terms

We may revise these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date above. Changes take effect when posted, and your continued use of the Site after they are posted means you accept the revised Terms. Please review this page periodically.

15. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them or the Site are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. You agree that the courts located in the Province of Ontario, Canada will have exclusive jurisdiction over any such dispute, and you submit to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. If you access the Site from elsewhere, you are responsible for complying with your local laws.

16. General

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force, and the unenforceable provision will be applied to the maximum extent permitted by law. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a transfer of the Site. These Terms, together with any notices or additional terms posted on specific pages or datasets, are the entire agreement between you and the site operator regarding the Site.

17. Contact

Questions about these Terms, or requests relating to data reuse or corrections, can be sent to contact@example.com.

This page is a plain-language template provided for the site operator’s convenience and is not itself legal advice. It should be reviewed by a qualified lawyer before being relied upon.
